Tap In Leadership Academy’s Summer Enrichment Program is a multicultural six-week program for young scholars entering 5th through 12th grade. Housed at the McKinley Foundation on University of Illinois campus, scholars embark on higher education before completing high school.
Each week, scholars explore a different culture/world area through hands-on learning facilitated by university professionals. Scholars have the opportunity to listen to and participate in interactive activities offered by guest speakers and travel to field studies on campus and throughout the community.
Tap In’s Summer Enrichment Program is fundamentally based on intentional learning. During morning sessions, scholars participate in academic activities with strong emphases on literacy, cultural awareness, leadership, and service learning. Scholars have the opportunity to make the University of Illinois campus their own through individualized instruction by U of I professionals. In the afternoon, scholars embark on intentional learning through recreational activities. Scholars learn about health and fitness through activities such as the Tap In Olympics, and explore cultural learning through visual and performing arts.
Over the course of the six-week program, scholars experience culture and literacy in a fun, engaging matter. Scholars who attend the academy are chosen based on their visible leadership potential, mid- to high-range academic standing. Scholars become familiar with community concerns and gain an understanding of how they can become change agents. Collaborations with the University of Illinois, Parkland College, Champaign County Schools, and numerous community partners provide hands-on activities, field studies, guest lectures, and mentoring.
